The Dutch naval vessel Zr. Ms. Groningen has intercepted a drug shipment in the Caribbean for the third time in a month. The day before yesterday, the patrol ship, together with the Caribbean Coast Guard, managed to stop a sailing boat with 80 kilos of cocaine on board.
The counter for Groningen is thus at a thousand kilos of drugs intercepted in September. Previously, 455 and 465 kilos of cocaine respectively were seized from two boats.
The Ms. Groningen and the coast guard spotted a suspicious go-fast boat on the radar the day before yesterday in the early morning. They then saw that the speedboat came to a stop next to a sailing boat, which was near the Groningen. The go-fast boat returned south shortly afterwards.
Three bales
Two rubber boats from the Groningen then sailed to the sailing boat for a check. After consultation with the coast guard, that ship was transferred to a patrol boat of the team. He towed the vessel to Curaçao.
During an extensive check in the port of Willemstad, three bales of drugs were found of a total of 80 kilos. The only person on board, a British man, has been arrested. Both the drugs and the man have been handed over to the police.
Sr. Ms. Groningen has been active in the Caribbean since the beginning of July. The ship is used, among other things, for anti-drug operations and humanitarian aid.
