A South Korean official was shot and cremated by North Korea in the territorial waters of the communist country. The South Korean Ministry of Defense reported this to Yonhap news agency on Thursday.

The 47-year-old official at South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries disappeared Monday when he carried out an inspection on a ship about six miles south of the North South Korean sea border. Fearing that the current had driven the man into the waters of North Korea, South Korea had launched a search.
It is not clear why the man had entered North Korea’s territorial waters. According to the media, his shoes were still on board and so he may have jumped into the water to defect to the communist north.
South Korea condemns the act and wants North Korea to punish the perpetrators. North Korea found the man in its waters and committed an atrocity by shooting him and burning his body, South Korea’s defense ministry said. “Our army strongly condemns such an atrocity and urges the North for a statement and a punishment of those responsible,” the statement also said.
