KONTAN.CO.ID – In the midst of the corona pandemic, public transportation operates with various restrictions such as seating arrangements with certain distances and the use of masks. However, is that enough to prevent the spread of the corona virus for airplane passengers?
Two research results published in scientific journals provide the answer. The first study looked at four people on the same 15-hour flight from Boston, United States to Hong Kong. Then the four of them tested positive for Covid-19. In that case, it was found that the genetic sequences of the viruses in all four of them were identical, which strongly suggests that the virus can be transmitted during air travel.
Another study examined a 10-hour flight from London, England to Hanoi, Vietnam, where 16 passengers were found to have the virus. Twelve of them sat in business class in two seats or rows, of the only symptomatic people in the cabin. “The proximity of seats is also strongly associated with an increased risk of infection,” read the results of the study.
Both results of the study were then published in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases. The findings are certainly very important as a guide for tourists who are slowly returning to using air flights.

Because, with these findings it is hoped that there will be ways that can be done to avoid exposure to the corona virus. For the record, this research looked at two flights that took place in March, and it is not known whether the passengers were wearing masks or not.
Airlines currently require all passengers and crew on board to wear masks. In addition, many airlines have flown planes with smaller passenger capacities, and blocked the middle seats to create distance between passengers.
Well, the research begins by examining the records of 1,110 people who have contracted Covid-19. From there it is seen who has made the trip, which leads to the discovery of a group of four who were on the same long flight, on a Boeing 777.
The study was able to pinpoint the unique sequences of the virus to all four people who had the virus, where it is possible that two of the married people, sitting behind one other passenger, had been infected before the flight. “However, the only location where the four have been in close proximity for any length of time is inside the aircraft cabin,” the study said.
