UK government forecasts row of 7,000 trucks at border after no deal | NOW

The UK government expects long lines of trucks in Dover in January if the EU and UK fail to negotiate a trade deal. In the worst scenario, there will soon be rows of 7,000 trucks that want to enter the EU without the correct papers. That is stated in a leaked letter from the British government.

In that worst scenario, the government assumes that 70 percent of all truck drivers who want to enter the EU are not prepared for Brexit. So they do not have the correct papers to cross the border.

If there were indeed a line of 7,000 trucks, the drivers would have to wait about two days before they can cross the border. The flow of goods between Dover and Calais could then shrink by 80 percent.

The letter was written by Cabinet Affairs Minister Michael Gove. He thinks it will be okay with the crowds in the first days of January, but that it will increase quickly afterwards. After about three months, the crowds will ease again unless France introduces strict passport controls. That could also hinder the flow.
