During the event held on Tuesday 22 September Battery Day Elon Musk said that the company plans to reduce the prices of its electric vehicles to $ 25 thousand. Such a model should appear in the Tesla line in the next three years.
Tesla hopes to reduce the prices of its cars by making batteries cheaper. First, the company plans to establish its own battery production. This will happen, however, not earlier than 2022. At the same time, the head of Tesla noted: this does not mean that the company will refuse to purchase Panasonic batteries and batteries from other suppliers. Our own plant will allow us to increase the number of available batteries, and hence to increase the production of electric vehicles. Secondly, Mr. Musk, as before, announced the company’s plans to abandon the use of cobalt in batteries, which should also reduce the cost of batteries. But when exactly this will happen is unknown. Finally, Tesla intends to open a cathode plant in North America, which will ultimately lead to a 76% reduction in the company’s cathode cost.
Note that Elon Musk has previously announced the appearance of the Tesla car for $ 25 thousand over the next three years – this was in 2018. Obviously, the timing of the appearance of a budget car is shifting.
On the eve of Battery Day, the founder and head of the company seriously upset investors, saying in his Twitterthat during the event, it will be discussed, among other things, about “the situation with the production of new models of Semi, Cybertruck and Roadster – we will not be able to achieve serious production volumes until 2022”. Tesla shares reacted to this with a sharp decline – more than 6%.
