Moscow –
President of Russia Vladimir Putin delivered a speech via video at the General Assembly Session PBB. In his speech, Putin showed off the Sputnik V vaccine, which he called the world’s first Coronavirus vaccine, and declared Russia open to cooperation with other countries.
“I repeat that we are very open and ready to partner,” Putin said as reported AFP, Tuesday (22/9/2020).
The Sputnik V vaccine was developed by the Gamaleya Moscow Research Center. Russia announced in August 2020 that it was the world’s first registered Corona vaccine.
While the vaccine has shown promising results in early trials, Russia has not yet completed the final stages of clinical trials, in which the vast majority of people receive the vaccine or placebo.
However, Russia has vaccinated top officials, including Defense Ministry Sergei Shoigu and Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin. Putin said that one of his vaccinated daughters had only mild reactions.
The Russian Direct Investment Fund which has supported the development of the vaccine said that 20 countries had ordered supplies of the Sputnik V vaccine in the last month. Putin also urged an online conference to be held in the near future with other countries that are ‘interested in working together on creating a vaccine against the Corona virus’.
“We are ready for our various experiences,” said Putin. It also offered to supply other countries with “a Russian vaccine that has demonstrated its reliability, safety and effectiveness.”
He also praised Russia’s speed in developing a series of testing and treatment systems to diagnose and treat the Corona virus.
“Our country has played an active role in global and regional efforts to combat COVID-19 and provide assistance to the most affected countries,” Putin said.
Not only that, Putin also touched on the Corona virus case among UN staff. Putin also offered to give them the Sputnik V vaccine.
“Russia is ready to provide UN staff with all necessary professional assistance: in particular we are proposing our vaccine offering for the voluntary vaccination of UN staff and its subsidiaries,” he said.
