The boy was found in the Noord-Willemskanaal in December last year near Ubbena and died two weeks later from the consequences. The judge believes that Den B. did too little to save his son. The man is also punished for withdrawing his child from legal custody. For example, he was not reachable on the night of the incident because he had switched off his phone. Paul den B. says that there was a fatal accident on December 19, 2019. According to the father, the child slipped when he was peeing. The court, however, severely charges the father for taking his child to a dark, steep slope along the water and not holding him.
When the child fell into the water, the man did not call for help, did not jump into the water to save the toddler, and he is said to have behaved remarkably when he called the emergency center. Emergency services rescued the child from the water and resuscitated him. The boy died on December 31. Through the actions of Den B. he has caused irreparable suffering to the mother of the child, which is heavily blamed on him.
