Until then, the mask was only compulsory in the streets of the city center of Caen (Calvados). But students and families in particular have long had the habit of gathering in the grounds and on the lawns surrounding the castle, a little away from this center. They were therefore not obliged to wear the mask there.
However, the spread of the virus has accelerated significantly in recent weeks in Calvados to the point of tipping the department into the red zone. It did not take more to get the prefecture to take a decree obliging the inhabitants to “observe in and around this castle the same rules as in the city center, in other words to avoid gatherings and especially to wear the mask” .
“It is a response proportionate to the worsening situation. It is about doing everything to dedensify gatherings and avoid more drastic measures as far as possible in the coming days, ”explains the Prefect of Calvados, Philippe Court.
Students in the crosshairs
For its part, the city is also stepping up to ban access to the lawns of the ramparts, from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. until December 31, 2020.
Decisions which follow, in particular the eve of weekends, to too large gatherings on these sites, of young students reluctant to respect social distancing.
“It’s true, admits Louise, herself a geography student, that there are evenings when there were probably too many people. It might be clearer that way, although it’s a bit frustrating for many to lose this particularly warm part of town. “
