Italy
Italy has registered 1,587 new coronavirus infections in the past 24 hours, increasing the total number of cases to 298,156 since the beginning of the pandemic, the local Ministry of Health reported today.
This Sunday there were another 15 deaths, increasing the total number of deaths by covid-19 to 35,707, according to the same source.
The region most affected by the pandemic remains Lombardy, followed by Veneto, Campania and Lazio, where the capital, Rome, is located.
Italy, which enacted a state of emergency on February 21, is the second European country most affected by the covid-19 pandemic, after the United Kingdom.
According to a report by the French agency AFP, the covid-19 pandemic has already caused at least 957,948 deaths and more than 30.8 million cases of infection in 196 countries and territories, since a new coronavirus was detected in late December, in China.
Today and Monday, Italians are going to the polls for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, to elect the governments of seven of the 20 regions and vote in a referendum to reduce the number of deputies by one third.
Initially scheduled for the end of March, these two elections have been postponed several times due to the pandemic. The Italian government chose to distribute the vote over two days to avoid crowds.
All eyes are on three of the regions, where a right-wing victory could shake the government of Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, supported by the coalition between the 5 Star Movement (M5S, anti-system) and the Democratic Party (PD, center-left) ).
The three regions in question are Campania, Apulia and mainly Tuscany, the bastion of the left for more than half a century and where the ballot boxes place candidates from the left and the right-wing coalition (which includes far-right parties) very close.
UK
The UK today has 18 deaths and 3,899 new cases of infection and the British government is considering moving ahead with social restrictions or confinement in the coming days, the country’s health minister said today.
Matt Hancock told the BBC today that he discussed, this weekend, with the mayor of the capital, what kind of measures would be needed to contain the spread of the new coronavirus.
The government official stated that “it cannot be ruled out that, at some point in the next week, citizens are asked to work from home again and warned that only by following the rules can a new confinement be avoided.
The UK has recorded 394,257 confirmed cases and 41,777 deaths from covid-19 since the start of the pandemic.
Of the total deaths, 18 occurred in the last 24 hours, according to the most current balance released today.
The country currently records 3,899 new cases of infection, a number slightly lower than that reported on Saturday, when 4,422 was reached, the record for daily positive cases.
In the capital, for every 100,000 inhabitants, the number of infected people increased in a week from 18.8 to 25 and it is estimated that the positives identified in London have reached the north of England, where there are already stricter controls.
In view of the situation, the Government announced, as of the 28th, to impose fines of up to 10,000 pounds (10,690 euros) for infected citizens who do not comply with the prophylactic isolation or who are suspected of having been in contact with infected people.
Those who have less income and have to remain in quarantine benefit from a £ 500 grant (€ 531).
