The Zandvoort Circuit has shut down the Supercar Sunday event at around 2.30 pm due to large crowds. On the site, the corona measures were difficult to enforce, a spokesperson for the circuit told NU.nl.
More visitors came to the event than expected, says spokesman Kees Koning. The circuit decided to close the gates and shut down the program. In total, about four thousand tickets were sold for the event, says Koning.
At Supercar Sunday, organized by the company Cars and Business, special cars are shown in action on the track. The program was originally supposed to run until 6pm. Ticket sales initially continued on location, but was stopped at the request of the circuit.
Several times an announcement has been made to keep 1.5 meters between themselves, an eyewitness tells NU.nl, “but people were very close together in several places”. There were long queues at the catering and main stand.
Because the event took place on the site of Circuit Zandvoort, enforcement is the responsibility of the site managers and the municipality.
“We have been informed and have made a phone call to ask what is going on,” says spokesman for the Zandvoort municipality Jessica Grootenboer against NU.nl. Observers from the municipality were present at the event. Ultimately, the measures taken were taken by Circuit Zandvoort itself.
According to Koning, the organization had taken sufficient precautions and deployed people with yellow vests, among other things, to monitor the mutual distance, but the influx of the public eventually turned out to be too great.
