Books – Alaa Hajjaj:
The National Communications Authority is examining two requests from Telecom Egypt and Vodafone Egypt to obtain new mobile frequencies, after the device launched an auction last Thursday between the four mobile companies to sell new frequencies.
The National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority launched new mobile frequencies of 60 MHz in the form of two “40 MHz” packages for 600 million dollars, and 20 MHz for 300 million dollars in the 2600 MHz band.
Masrawy explains the full story of the introduction of new mobile frequencies and what they mean for mobile customers in Egypt.
What are the frequencies?
It is the path through which mobile phone signals travel from one mobile tower to another, which results in providing voice and data services “the Internet” to customers.
How do mobile customers benefit?
The higher the frequencies of the mobile operator, the better the quality of service, because the more frequencies allow to reduce the chances of interruption of calls or slow Internet.
The availability of frequencies allows mobile companies to improve the quality of service provided to the customer, whether for voice or data, and allows the company to provide its services to a greater number of customers.
The position of the new frequencies
Telecom Egypt said yesterday that it submitted a financial and technical offer to the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) to obtain a new 2600 MHz bandwidth with TDD technology, under the usufruct system for a period of ten years, pending the process of approval and approval by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority.
Government sources told Masrawy that Vodafone also submitted a financial offer to obtain the frequencies offered, while Orange and Etisalat did not bid so far.
This is not the first time that the National Telecommunications Authority has offered frequencies to mobile companies.
In 2016, mobile companies obtained a package of new frequencies while obtaining licenses to provide fourth generation services.
Orange obtained a fourth generation license in addition to 10 MHz of frequencies, for $ 495 million, half of which is paid in Egyptian pounds.
Telecom Egypt also obtained the license in addition to 10 MHz of frequencies, for 546.7 million dollars, half of which is paid in Egyptian pounds.
Vodafone Egypt obtained a license for the fourth generation and 5 MHz frequency for 346 million dollars, half of which are paid in dollars.
