The Los Angeles Police Department wanted to become greener. It turned out, however, that the idea of buying electric cars did not quite come true. Now he’s selling out useless electrics for next to nothing. The models offered include almost new BMW i3s.
In 2016, Los Angeles police announced they were taking a step towards ecology. In place of the proven, but not ecological, police cars with combustion engines (including Chevrolet Impalii, Ford Crown Victoria and others), small electric BMW i3 were to appear. Nearly $ 3 million was spent on this purpose (purchase of 100 cars and construction of charging stations). This investment divided the LA community. Green supporters were pleased and proud, purists thought it was a mistake, and experts simply said it wouldn’t work. A few years after the purchase, it turned out that the latter were right.

The first voices raising the topic of the unsuccessful investment appeared two years after the purchase of the cars. The media wrote about the unsuccessful “transformation” and the fact that the police BMW i3s are used almost exclusively for administrative purposes. This was due to two issues. First of all, due to the provision prohibiting the use of these cars for chases or rescue operations, and with a range of about 100 miles, which in the case of the Los Angeles metropolis is a drop in the ocean of needs. However, the unsuccessful project did not bring any constructive conclusions. According to information provided by CBS Los Angeles, the purchased cars constituted the first part of the project, and the city planned to buy another 100 cars and build 26 charging stations. The total cost of this project was PLN 10.2 million, i.e. approximately PLN 38 million.
After four years, the LA Police Board decided to sell the unused cars. On the website of one of the dealers, 23 cars from the police BMW i3 appeared. Importantly, they have no markings and no additional hardware has been installed, which means that their dashboards are intact.
Some of the copies put up for sale have a mileage of 18 thousand kilometers. miles (approx. 29 thousand km). It is not much for a 3- or 4-year-old car. However, the most surprising thing is the price. They were issued for 15-18 thousand. dollars (56-67 thousand PLN). It is below the market price in Poland (PLN 100-120 thousand). Thus, people looking for an electrician may be interested in importing such BMW i3.
