Officially, the Republicans first wanted to hear “the voice of the people” and let the new president decide. Apparently not now, but the question is how it should be done and whether everyone will go along.
This time, for example, there is little time, all the more so because a third of the senators are busy with their election campaign and are therefore not very much in Washington. Two, it is not clear whether all Republicans will rush to appoint a Chief Justice. Lisa Murkowski from Alaska and Susan Collins from Maine think that this is no longer possible until November. Collins had previously ruled out that a “lame duck Senate” – a retiring Senate after the election – would be allowed to appoint a Chief Justice. The newly elected Senate will take office in early January.
