Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – There are two ‘weapons’ that are not realized to be a strong combination to ward off Covid-19.
First, of course, the masks that have been echoed so far, now the second is glasses. The results of a study from China show that people who wear glasses every day have a lower risk of being infected with Covid-19.
“Glasses can ward off Covid-19 infection because they prevent the wearer from touching their eyes, thus avoiding hand-to-eye transmission of the virus,” said Yiping Wei, the study’s correspondent author who is also a doctor at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University, quoted by WebMd.com.
The research study was published online in the journal JAMA Ophthalmology on September 16. It also states that wearing these glasses is not related to the severity of the Covid-19 symptoms. Research shows that eyeglass wearers who contract Covid-19 are as sick as Covid-19 patients who have normal vision.

“While this is an observational study and you can’t conclude anything definite from this, there is suggestion that eye protection of any kind can reduce the risk of infection,” said another researcher, Amesh Adalja of the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security in Baltimore.
In order to prevent transmission, Chief Medicine and Chief Epidemiologist of Mount Sinai South Nassau in New York, doctor Aaron Glatt revealed that many hospitals require doctors, nurses and visitors to wear goggles or face shields along with other protective equipment.

Namely a mask to protect yourself from the SARS-CoV-1 virus. Because of this, glasses may act as partial protection and must be used in conjunction with other protective equipment.
“That’s why we make it a mandate, but people often ask: if I wear glasses, is that enough? And our answer is no,” said Glatt.
Therefore, the use of masks cannot be forgotten. Head of the Centers of Disease and Prevention (CDC) Robert Redfield in a working meeting with the US Parliament on Wednesday (16/9/2020) said that currently a powerful weapon that can fight Covid-19 besides vaccines, namely masks.
Robert Redfield said he had scientific evidence that showed masks worked to ward off the spread of the corona virus and masks were humanity’s best defense today.
“I said that maybe now the mask is more guaranteed to protect me from Covid-19 than when I took the Covid-19 vaccine,” he was quoted as saying by The Washington Post.
Robert Redfield added that the most potent coronavirus vaccine, which is likely to be available in limited quantities by the end of this year, is likely to have only 70% immunogenicity.
Immunogenicity is the ability of a vaccine to build an immune response against a virus.
“If I don’t get an immune response, the vaccine won’t protect me. But the mask protects me,” said Robert Fedfield.
