Krefeld Regular visitors to Krefeld’s indoor swimming pools have been suffering for more than half a year. Because of the corona pandemic, the houses are closed. Even with the end of the school holidays in summer there was no opening.

Meerbusch, for example, is much further ahead, because the sea bath there has been available to bathers again since mid-June, subject to strict hygiene requirements.

But there is hope. “We will try to get all indoor pools into corona operation in the coming weeks. The target is the beginning of October, ”said city director Markus Schön, who is responsible for the baths, when asked. First of all, the opening in Bockum and Fischeln is to be expected, then Uerdingen and the two teaching swimming pools.

The warm bathing day in the Stadtbad Uerdingen on Kurfürstenstrasse is particularly missed. On Saturdays, the neat Art Nouveau building attracts many regular guests with a water temperature of 30 degrees.

For club sports, the indoor pool in the Bockum swimming center has been in operation again since July. According to the administration, a concept for the operation of pools under corona conditions is necessary to enable access for the public. This requires additional personnel expenditure and that is only feasible in coordination with the staff council.

Bathroom staff are needed in other departments

The administration gave an extensive answer to the question of this newspaper about how the employees who otherwise do duty in open bathrooms are deployed during the long period of closure. Accordingly, the bathroom staff is only available to a limited extent because the employees had to help out in the regulatory, health and social services and in the job center due to the pandemic. In addition, there are several certificates because of belonging to the risk group.

The operational staff is needed in the Bockum bathing center, to prepare for the Corona operation and for other tasks in the baths (flushing the pipes, water treatment). In addition, four positions in the bathroom area are currently vacant.

Despite the great heat in August, the number of visitors to the Bockum swimming center is sobering this year because of Corona: between January and August, only 33,798 bathers were counted. In the same period of the previous year there were 46,332. The income of the municipal baths fell by around 80,000 euros. The city wants to quantify the failure – like all corona-related shortfalls and additional expenses – to the state because help has been promised to the municipalities from Düsseldorf and Berlin.

Nobody knows how long the indoor pool in Bockum will be available at the moment. The council recently decided not to renovate the ailing, listed building, but to build a new one. A location is being discussed on the grounds of the Bockum swimming center or on Westparkstrasse in combination with the construction of a new ice rink. The Bockum bathing location will be retained in any case, because politicians have also decided to renovate the outdoor swimming pool.

The swimming pool master plan approved by the council also states that the school and club requirements for water areas are to be realized through a multifunctional pool providing basic supplies for school swimming and club sports.
