Covid, Bassetti: Older people in the ward but 99% recover

Compared to a few weeks ago “we go back to seeing elderly patients affected by Sars-CoV-2 in the wards. This is because they are the most fragile and because the virus can precipitate pre-existing situations, that is, people with diabetes, heart disease, respiratory problems, those who follow multiple – therapies. In people over the years the pathology has a different impact “. However, “the disease today has a decidedly lower mortality, 0.4-0.6%, and in 99.6% of cases it is cured”. Matteo Bassetti, director of the Infectious Diseases Clinic of the San Martino hospital in Genoa, underlines this to Adnkronos Salute.

According to the infectious disease specialist, “there was a slight increase in the average age of positives due to the effect of the holidays: it is young people who have moved more and for this reason have been more exposed to the virus”, later bringing it to family. “But it is only the age of the infected and not of the patients that has changed – he observes – I only hospitalize over 80 with, fortunately, a different clinical situation from that of March-April and I have not died for some time”.

“It is true – says Bassetti – the sea is shaking, but out of 40 thousand infections only 5% needs treatment. In the hot months of the emergency we had peaks of 25-30% of the positives who needed treatment in intensive care” . Is this why we intercepted cases better? “Surely, then we do more swabs and then it is now clear that the lethality of the virus is reduced”.
