Viking – Looking for a waste of chances

  • Viking – Aberdeen 0-2 (0-1)

Viking burned several great chances when Aberdeen came to visit in the Europa League qualifiers on Thursday. Then it ended with a 0-2 loss and a European exit for the Siddis.

The loss to Scottish Aberdeen in the second qualifying round was of the bitter kind for Viking. Both Ylldren Ibrahimaj, Veton Berisha and Zymer Bytyqi had great opportunities that should have given goals, but Viking had to go goalless off the field.

– We were not clinical enough today. That’s probably how it is when the level is a bit up, then it is difficult to score, Viking coach Bjarne Berntsen told Stavanger Aftenblad after the match.

Aberdeen took the lead at the end of the first half, and the Viking players protested wildly and wanted an offside cancellation. Ross McCrorie fired from 16 yards out and scored safely, but an Aberdeen player was offside on the penalty spot when the shot went wide.

After taking the trip out to the line judge for a small deliberation, the match leader stated that the goal should remain, and Viking had to go to the break with 0-1.

Wasted

By then, the Stavanger team had already burned several great chances. Ibrahimaj twice got the opportunity from the penalty spot. On the first try he did not shuffle his legs properly enough to get a finish on goal, and on the second he headed far to the side.

Immediately after the break, Viking got another great goal chance when a rehearsed corner variant ended at Berisha. The Viking top scorer squeezed in, but had to watch the ball stroke the post on the outside.

Viking pressed to get the equalizer, but not when it was a double chance for Berisha and Zymer Bytyqi 20 minutes before full time it ended with nettusus.

Punctured

Instead, there should be more Aberdeen cheers. Twelve minutes before full time, Viking goalkeeper Iven Austbø misjudged, and the corner from Ryan Hedges went straight to goal. Symptomatic of the match, Even Østensen’s end of overtime just ended right next to goal.

Thus, the European adventure against Viking is already before it got off to a good start. For Aberdeen, a match against Sporting Lisbon awaits in the next round.
