The seven-hour flight to nowhere sells fast, in 10 minutes tickets sold out in Sydney

For many, air travel is simply a method of getting from one destination to another as quickly as possible but with the covid emergency, the related extreme security measures and closed borders flights have dropped drastically so that some companies have had to lay off thousands of workers but there are also those who have run for cover by inventing “fly to nowhere”. This is the case of Quantas, an Australian airline, which has decided to add a flight with no destination that is, a trip by plane that takes place exclusively for the purpose of the trip, not to reach a destination.

The gimmick seems to have been very popular with Australians since in just ten minutes the tickets sold out. The flight, which will depart and arrive at the airport of Sidney, it will last about seven hours and will be a sort of panoramic tour like the one that buses offer to tourists in big cities but on a large scale. The plane, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner usually reserved for long-distance travel, will in fact make a scenic flight over the main tourist destinations of Queensland, the Gold Coast, New South Wales and the most remote areas of the country’s hinterland. From above, travelers will be able to appreciate the various natural or artistic destinations and in some points the plane will also lower in altitude to allow a better view.

It will be in practice a kind of tourist trip during which Quantas also promised special entertainment on board, including the presence of a surprise celebrity. Flight QF787 will depart from Sydney Domestic Airport on 10 October with 134 passengers who have managed to secure tickets but will be only the first of a series of similar flights. After all, several Asian companies have already decided to operate scenic flights following the Covid-19 emergency, even if Quantas is the longest one for now.
