Nothing is going well for Alex Galchenyuk. While a center spot seemed to have opened up for the American at the Minnesota Wild with the departure of Eric Staal, it looks like he is not in GM Bill Guerin’s plans either.
According to sports site The Athletic, the GM said on Wednesday that a return of Galchenyuk with the team was “unlikely”.
The three-season deal that brought Galchenyuk $ 4.9 million annually expires at the end of the playoffs. He will become a free agent without compensation.
The former Montreal Canadiens came to Minnesota from the Pittsburgh Penguins on February 10. With hopeful Calen Addison and a first-round pick in 2021, Galchenyuk had served as a bargaining chip for the “Pens” acquisition of winger Jason Zucker.
When he joined the Wild, the 26-year-old had seven points in 14 games. He also added 17 points in 45 games with the Penguins.
Since his six-season stint with the Habs which ended in 2018, Galchenyuk seems to have difficulty in making his niche with a team. He was also a member of the Arizona Coyotes for a year.
