GenPI.co – Lung specialist dr. Erlina Burhan provides an explanation regarding happy hypoxia. It is known that the term developed during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Happy hypoxia occurs because of hypoxia, which is a lack of oxygen in the blood. If there is less oxygen in the blood, people will be suffocated and have symptoms, but this does not happen to some Covid-19 patients,” Erlina said in a virtual discussion at Graha. BNPB, Wednesday (16/9).

Erlina then explained why this happened. The problem is in the lungs of people who feel happy hypoxia.
“Why? Because it is known that in conditions of damage to the nerves that deliver the tightness sensor to the brain. So that the brain does not respond, so the brain does not know the lack of oxygen in the blood. Normally if there is a lack of oxygen there will usually be a signal to the brain that the body lacks oxygen. , “explained Erlina.
“The brain then orders the body to take in as much oxygen as possible. By breathing quickly, so it will look tight,” he continued
Erlina then described the discovery of a Covid-19 patient with happy hypoxia. According to him, this incident happened for a long time, namely from April to May.
“It used to be called silent hypoxia. There was a case of a 60-year-old male who had symptoms of Covid-19 and over time the cough got worse and the body grew weak. However, this patient was not strangely congested,” he explained.
