Piet S., who was also arrested himself, has been one of the leading figures in the underworld for years. He has been associated with major drug trafficking and underworld murders. Although the police do not officially confirm it, S. now appears to have been exposed thanks to intercepted messages via Encrochat phones.
Seventeen people
Seventeen people between the ages of 25 and 68 have been arrested at the moment. In addition to the arrests, raids were carried out on dozens of locations in the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Hungary and Slovakia. Narcotics, firearms and cash were found. Dozens of cars were also seized.

The criminal investigation department got a picture of this criminal organization after a lengthy and extensive criminal investigation. Today’s action deployed nearly a thousand police officers in different countries. In addition to the seventeen arrests, dozens of raids were carried out simultaneously at various locations in the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Hungary and Slovakia.
Narcotics and money laundering
Most detained persons are suspected of involvement in drug trafficking and money laundering. A number of them are also suspected of illegal possession of weapons. At the moment, the investigation is still in full swing and new arrests and seizures are not ruled out.
It is suspected that the seized goods were obtained with profits from the drug trade. Money laundering is the conduct of transactions to conceal the origin of illegally obtained money. This concerns money from criminal activities, such as the trafficking in narcotics.
International cooperation
This international investigation was made possible by a Spanish-Dutch collaboration within a so-called Joint Investigation Team (JIT). Cooperation took place through Eurojust’s European network of prosecutors. The Netherlands has now requested the Spanish and Belgian authorities to surrender the suspects arrested.
The investigation team also used information obtained from the company Encrochat in this investigation. This chat service was recently hacked by the Dutch police. For years, that company provided cryptocommunication services, mainly to criminals.
