The number of hedgehogs in the Netherlands is decreasing due to disease and drought

The hedgehog population in the Netherlands is getting smaller and smaller. The Mammal Society is concerned about the consequences of the drought and of a disease that broke out among the hedgehogs this year.

They hope to receive as many sightings of the animals as possible during the special Hedgehog weekend, which takes place on Saturday and Sunday.

The Dutch Wildlife Health Center, part of Utrecht University, examined twenty-five animals, but has not yet been able to find an unambiguous explanation. Most hedgehogs also had pneumonia, some carried bacteria.
