Electric cars, should you already buy them or should you wait?
In recent years there is more and more talk of electric cars as a natural evolution of private transport. Bring to the fore by Tesla, electric cars have gone from a rare curiosity to being an increasingly common reality. But is it already time to invest in an electric car or is it still a gamble and is it better to wait? Let’s see the pros and cons together.
Positives
First of all, we point out the often underestimated possibility of recharging the car through the home system. At an average net expense of about 22 cents per Kwh, you can completely recharge the car in the time of a night with about 3-5 euros for a “full”.
Even less if you use a “wall box” that delivers more power to recharge our car. Furthermore, both the electric car and the wall box are subject to incentives and tax reliefs that are interesting for any private individual.
Finally we consider the maintenance really reduced to the minimum terms. There are no filters or engine oil to replace.
Downsides
There will be no maintenance on oil and filters but the electric forces us to keep an eye on the wear of the batteries. It is estimated that in 8 years the charge capacity of the batteries currently on the market will be reduced to 70-80%. And replacement at the moment would appear to be as expensive as the cost of a new vehicle. In short, it will be necessary to see what insurance policies the various sellers will propose with regard to battery packs.
Another problem with the electric at the moment is the objective difficulty of making long journeys. Autonomy is already limited, but they are also rare column fast charging. Which is quick so to speak, because we still talk about a couple of hours for a full tank. Which in a medium to long-term trip can make a big difference.
Then there is the sore point of the price. At the moment the market does not yet offer great choices. And the few choices there are are not all exactly affordable for a low to middle income user.
Electric cars, should you already buy them or should you wait? In conclusion
In conclusion, the electric car is an excellent option for those who have to travel a few tens of km every day and not many more to go to work or run small errands.
Even better if you have a garage or private parking space to attach the car to at night to “top up” the battery charge during the night.
For all those who have to travel many kilometers every day or have to do long journeys often, better wait a little longer. Technological evolution will certainly one day lead electric cars to be attractive to all categories, but perhaps this is not the time yet.
