Coronavirus, stable infections. Rt up 0.4 with reopening of schools – Health

Coronavirus infections in Italy drop slightly: in the last 24 hours, according to data on the Civil Protection website, 1,501 new cases have been registered, while yesterday there were 1,616 new cases. The total number of infected people, including victims and healed, is 286,297. The number of victims declined today, 6 compared to 10 yesterday, for a total of 35,603 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic. The healed and discharged total 213,191, 759 more than yesterday. Over 92 thousand swabs carried out.
Intensive care patients increased by 7 to 182. There are now 1,951 hospitalized patients (+102 compared to yesterday), 35,370 people (+627) are in home isolation. The currently positives increase by 736 and are now 37,503. No region has zero new cases, Lombardy leads with 269 positives found, according to data from the Ministry of Health.

According to an estimate contained in the documents attached to the minutes of the Scientific Technical Committee which had already analyzed the various scenarios at the end of April in view of the start of phase 2, in early May, with the reopening of schools, the spread of Covid 19 could rise by around 0.4.

The estimates are contained in one of the documents prepared by Inail on the data of the Higher Institute of Health and the Bruno Kessler Foundation and reported in the minutes of last April 22: a detailed report in which all the possible effects produced on the spread of the virus are listed. from the reopening in the various closed sectors following the lockdown, at the end of which the technicians advised to adopt “a progressive approach in the reopening measures”, reiterating in any case the need to use masks in all public places, social distancing and the ban on gathering.

One of the tables in the document indicates the effect that reopenings have on the Rt index: without any closure, the Rt is at 2.25 (average between 2.06 and 2.44); with only the closure of the schools the index drops to 1.86 (average between 1.66 and 1.97), therefore 0.39 less. If smart working is also added to the closure of schools, the index drops further to 1.69 (average between 1.54 and 1.83), 0.56 less.

in the meantime the president of the Campania Region, Vincenzo De Luca, is doubtful about the reopening of schools. “Not today. On September 24 I don’t know: we don’t know how many desks have arrived to date, nor how many teachers there are”. “We contested – recalls De Luca – two orientations of the national government, which in our opinion are wrong: to make serological tests for school staff optional and, here, in Campania they are mandatory. And the measurement of body temperature: we decided, even though under the competence of the Region, to give three thousand euros to principals for the purchase of thermo scanners for measuring the temperature inside schools. So we are taking on the delays of the Ministry of Education “. And again: “They don’t know how many desks have arrived to date, we don’t know how many teachers there are. We will fight to prevent teachers who are already on the staff from being sent 500 kilometers away and we intend to activate supplementary service contracts with private companies, which was already being used for school trips, to increase the means and guarantee the transport and safety of students in the start of the new school year “.
