Zverev and Thiem both qualify for the US Open | final for the first time NOW

Alexander Zverev qualified for the final of the US Open in the night from Friday to Saturday (Dutch time). The German was too strong for Pablo Carreño Busta. The opponent in the final battle will be Dominic Thiem who defeated Daniil Medvedev in the semi-final. Both tennis players have never played a final at the American tournament.

The fifth seeded Zverev fought back after two lost sets and eventually beat the Spaniard Carreño Busta in a five-setter 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 and 6-3.

It is the first time that Zverev is in the final of the US Open. He never got past the fourth round in New York. Earlier this year, he reached the semifinals of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career at the Australian Open.

The 23-year-old German follows in the footsteps of his fellow countrymen Boris Becker and Michael Stich with the final place in the US Open. Becker played in the final of the US Open four times, winning the tournament in 1989 by beating Ivan Lendl. Stich only played the final once, but was unable to beat Andre Agassi in 1994.

Thiem beats Medvedev in three sets

In the second semifinal, Austrian Thiem was too strong for second-placed Medvedev. The Russian who was a losing finalist against Rafael Nadal last year, now had to recognize his superior in three sets in Thiem who won with straight sets 6-2, 7-6 (7) and 7-6 (5).

Thiem, third in the ranking, has never won a Grand Slam title. In January he reached the final of the Australian Open for the first time, but was unable to beat Novak Djokovic.
