50 people probably died when a gold mine collapsed in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. That happened after heavy rainfall.
According to a spokesman for a local mining NGO, there were 50 young miners in the shaft of the Kamituga mine when it collapsed. “Nobody could get out.”
Fatal mining accidents are common in Congo. Last year, 36 people lost their lives in a copper mine in Lualaba province, and last week a landslide killed three miners in Kasonga province.
