Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – President of the United States (US) Donald Trump claims to have protected Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) from congressional scrutiny after the brutal murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
This was revealed in a book entitled “Rage”, written by a senior journalist, Bob Woodward, which will be released next Tuesday, reports Business Insider, Thursday (10/9/2020).
In the book condemned by Trump, Woodward wrote that Trump called him on January 22 shortly after attending the WEF in Davos, Switzerland. During the conversation, Woodward urged Trump to talk about Khashoggi’s gruesome murder.
“People in [Washington] The post was disappointed with Khashoggi’s assassination, “Woodward told Trump on January 22, as he wrote in his book.” That is one of the most horrible things. You said it yourself. “
“Yes, but Iran kills 36 people a day, so …” Trump said in response, before Woodward shifted the subject and continued to press Trump about MBS’s role in ordering Khashoggi’s assassination.
“I saved her,” Trump said again, according to the book. “I can get Congress to leave it alone. I can get them to stop.”
59-year-old Khashoggi is an old Washington Post columnist. He is known to be a frequent critic of the Saudi government.
Khashoggi died of being murdered and mutilated at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, Turkey on October 2, 2018, while going there to get documents for his upcoming marriage. But since entering the consulate, Khashoggi has never reappeared.
In a conversation with Woodward at the time, Trump also admitted to being heavily involved.
“Well, I understand what you are saying, and I am involved a lot. I know everything about the whole situation,” he said, according to the book.
“He will always say he didn’t,” Trump said, referring to MBS. “He said that to everyone, and frankly I’m glad he said that. But he would say that to you, he would say that to Congress, and he would say that to everyone. He never said he did.”
A month after the tragic events, the CIA concluded that Prince MBS had personally ordered Khashoggi’s murder.
In response to a reporter’s question on Thursday about what he meant to save MBS, Trump declined to elaborate. “You have to figure it out for yourself.” said the controversial president.
Apart from the Khashoggi issue, according to reports, the book also discusses other issues related to Trump. One of them is about Trump’s relationship with Kim Jong-un, the leader of North Korea.
In the book Woodward wrote that Kim had told Trump about the murder of his uncle.
