The local government of A coruña has presented his project for the pedestrianization of the Cantons in the stretch from the Port Authority to the Juana de Vega crossing. Citizens will recover 11,000m2 of pedestrian space by reducing the current vehicle lanes to two and closing the crossing to San Andrés from the Obelisk. A project for this mandate with an investment of 3.2 million euros.
The mayor, Ines Rey, states that it is a return to a past in which mobility was more sustainable: “It is one of the great projects we will face in this term, one of the great transformations that were pending, and makes us look to the past, when the private vehicle did not have that preponderance, when the city was more human. “
Circulation conditions will be the same as those in the already pedestrianized area of the Marina, which will be seen extending to Juana de Vega including the pedestrianization also of Compostela street in the Lugo square.
The circulation on the road in the Cantons and the Marina will be restricted to public transport, bicycles, residents, loading and unloading and services.
Bays will be placed next to the road for taxi ranks and loading-unloading reservations, while the metropolitan transport stop will move to Alcalde Manuel Casás street, waiting for the changes that the entry into operation will entail. from the intermodal station. Compostela or Entrejardines streets, among others, will also be pedestrianized.
The project contemplates the unification of the gardens of Méndez Núñez, moving the current metropolitan bus stop next to the Colón Theater and with the anticipation of creating a specific terminal in the area of what is now the port area.
An extension of the Navy project to make the city “shine again.” Juan Díaz Villoslada, Councilor for Mobility and Urbanism, says: “The city has to shine again, we are facing a challenge in which A Coruña has a new historical stage with a new urban challenge”.
This Thursday was presented preliminary technical study, the project must be developed in all aspects, from landscaping to furniture in these coming months. The objective is to have it tendered over the next year to be able to see the works completed in this term.
