Since the outbreak of the corona virus, hand sanitizers, gloves and other protective products have been sold for a much higher price at Amazon in the United States. This is the conclusion of the American consumer watchdog Public Citizen in a report in which it accuses the largest online retailer in the world of acting unethically.

Public Citizen researched nearly twenty-five products on Amazon’s site. The bottom line: Amazon prices rose by as much as 1,000 percent in some cases compared to pre-pandemic and other websites prices. For example, Dial brand hand soap at the online superpower now costs $ 6.41, while the 200-milliliter bottle costs $ 1.49 to $ 2.29 elsewhere.
Public Citizen states that Amazon has broken certain rules. A number of states in America have a maximum price increase of ten percent. Enforcement of the rules is difficult only because legislation is not the same in all states.
Not on purpose
Amazon deliberately denies raising prices. Also, it should not be possible for external sellers who trade via the site to raise the price themselves. “Our systems are designed to provide customers with the best available online price and when we see an error, we work quickly to fix it,” the company said.
By the way, many more complaints were received at Public Citizen about price increases here and there for products that became scarce due to the crisis. Baking powder and cleaning agents are mentioned as examples.
