Nijmegen student cafes closed again due to corona infections

Mayor Bruls of Nijmegen will tackle the problems with pubs where more and more people are becoming infected. For example, he closes two pubs that can be linked to a large number of corona infections. These are the student cafes TweeKeerBellen and the Bascafé.

According to the mayor, 17 (TweeKeerBellen) and 11 (Bascafé) infections can be traced back to those entertainment venues. He expects that number to increase. TweeKeerBellen was also closed in July because the cafe had violated the corona rules.

Bigger research

At a press conference, Bruls further said that there will be a larger investigation into several catering establishments. He also said more cafes may be closed after that. There will also be additional consultation with Koninklijke Horeca Nederland and Bruls will establish contact with students and universities.

Bruls previously closed café Van Rijn in Nijmegen, also because of the large numbers of infections. There are now more than fifty there. The cafe has previously been criticized by Bruls for ignoring the rules especially after midnight.

Yesterday, the manager of the popular pub apologized for this. Due to the increasing number of corona infections, more than two hundred people are already in quarantine. They have been in close contact with people who had been in Van Rijn for more than 15 minutes.
