Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian, as reported by Sputnik on Thursday (09/10/2020), said the US move violated human rights. He also indicated that Beijing reserves the right to take further action in response to Washington’s move.
As is known, the US refused to provide visas for certain postgraduate students and researchers from China to enter the country. The decision was made to protect sensitive research from being stolen by Beijing amid deteriorating relations between the two countries. Adding to mounting tensions, the US has once again accused China of seeking to acquire America’s most advanced technology and innovation, including coronavirus research. These allegations were leveled as the US continued its crackdown on students and academics it said might be linked to the Chinese Army.
“We block visas for certain Chinese graduate students and researchers associated with China’s military fusion strategy to prevent them from stealing and instead take over sensitive research,” said the acting head of the US Department of Homeland Security, Chad Wolf.
He added that China was misusing US student visas to exploit American academics. (Also read: Difficult for spare parts, India expels cell phone manufacturers from China)
