The number of unemployed registered in the offices of the public employment services (formerly Inem) in the Canary Islands stood at 257,649 unemployed in the month of July, which has meant a decrease of 4,065 people (-1.55%) in relation the previous month.
However, in the interannual data, unemployment in the archipelago has registered an increase of 52,987 unemployed, which in percentage terms implied a rise of 25.89 percent compared to July 2019, according to data from the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy .
By provinces, unemployment fell somewhat more in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where it fell by 2,172 people, which is a decrease of 1.74 percent compared to the previous month, while in Las Palmas it fell by 1,893 people (- 1.38%).
Likewise, women continue to be the ones that mostly swell the unemployment lists in the islands, with 142,626 unemployed, followed by men who represent 115,023 unemployed, while 18,258 are under 25 years of age.
The services sector leads the drop in unemployment
In the Canary Islands, the drop in unemployment has been led by the Services sector, where unemployment fell by 3,158 people, followed by Construction, which fell by 753 and Industry, which fell by 183 people.
However, the Services sector continues to be the one with the most unemployed with 201,042 unemployed along with Construction, which reaches 23,434 unemployed, while Industry adds to the list of unemployed in the islands with 9,647 people.
In contrast, unemployment rises in people without a previous job and does so by 28, reaching the figure of 18,214 unemployed, as well as in Agriculture where it grows in one unemployed and stands at 5,312 unemployed in the sector.
Increase in contracts
As for hiring in the Canary Islands, it rose in July to 42,417 agreements, which implied a monthly increase of 44.99 percent, that is, 13,162 more firms. On the contrary, the interannual data registered a decrease of 49.03 percent, which meant 40,800 fewer agreements.
Thus, of the 42,417 contracts, 5,514 were permanent, which represented a monthly variation of 1,551 more agreements (+ 39.14%), while 36,903 were temporary, also registering an increase of 11,611 agreements (+45, 91%).
