In recent weeks, the Mechelen police have already confiscated six cars from drivers who committed one traffic offense after another. Those so-called ‘posers’ will have to pay a tax for the seizure, with which the city wants to recuperate the costs of towing and storage of the seized vehicles.

At the request of Mayor Alexander Vandersmissen (Open VLD), six vehicles belonging to reckless drivers have already been officially seized in Mechelen. By removing the cars from traffic, he hopes to safeguard and guarantee public order. The costs of the hoist and storage are currently still borne by the community, but with the introduction of a new tax, the driver of the vehicle will bear those costs in the future.
Depending on the size and weight of the car, a tax of € 272 to € 1,306 is charged. In the first instance, this will be collected from the driver of the vehicle, but if he fails to do so, the owner of the vehicle will be addressed.
Whether the vehicle will ever be put back into circulation is a decision of the police judge. The driver will have to justify his offenses before a police court, where it can be decided to confiscate the vehicle.
