The Center for Whale Research, in English Center for Whale Research, saw on Saturday the baby cub, nicknamed J-57, “swimming vigorously with its mother”, explains The Guardian.
Mother and baby were close to the Canadian province of British Columbia and estimate that the baby was born on Friday, September 4.
“On September 5, we followed the report by a whale watcher [local] that a very small calf had been seen, ”explained the Center for Whale Research.
The orca “Tahlequah was separated from the other orcas and was very evasive when it crossed the border with Canada”, so the Center for Whale Research ended the “meeting” and wished the mother orca and the new youngster “all the best in its path ”.
The story of this mother orca, who carried her dead baby, was like a mirror of mourning among animals. Tahlequah marked the journey of animal photographer Alena Ebeling-Schuld: “Her path of mourning was more than striking,” said the photographer to The Guardian, underlining the “complexity of animal emotions”.
But other observers argue that describing this episode of this orca as “mourning” is inappropriate anthropomorphism.
