Ranchers and residents of Villar de Santiago denounce the increase in bear attacks on cattle | Radio Bierzo

The farmers of the town of Villar de Santiago in Laciana denounce the loss of cattle due to the attacks of the bear that has claimed up to 3 animals in the last 3 months.

The remains of a partially eaten cow with a clear sign of having been attacked by a bear were located four days ago. Not only were signs of the animal’s claws found, but excrements of the specimen could also be located, an adult male according to the first hypotheses. The Seprona certified the attack in the presence of the local criminal, Miguel Maestro, who assures that ranchers and neighbors are fed up with the damage caused by the bear on their properties

In the last five years, the specimens have become more and more daring. To these attacks on livestock, we must add the night walks through the streets, the assault on garbage containers and damage to orchards and fruit trees. Master acknowledges that the lack of food in the mountains is one of the reasons for these nocturnal raids, but also the overpopulation of specimens that is denounced from all the districts of Laciana.
