Today in the Garden of Fate, a memorial place was officially opened for the founders of Latvia and the restorers of independence, informed the foundation “Koknese Foundation”.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, and it was planned to open the memorial site on May 4, but due to the virus pandemic and related gathering restrictions, it had to be postponed this spring.
September 6 was chosen as the date of the opening of the memorial site, taking into account that on this day 29 years ago the USSR was forced to recognize the full independence of the Baltic states occupied in 1940, the foundation said.
With the establishment of the new memorial place, Likteņdārzs has become the only place in Latvia where members of the Latvian People’s Council, who declared Latvia an independent, sovereign and democratic republic on November 18, 1918, and deputies of the Supreme Council, who adopted Latvia’s 1990 Declaration of Independence, were honored in one place. on May 4. As a sign of eternal gratitude to these people, their names are engraved on plaques at the memorial site.
The new memorial place in Likteņdārzs was located at the beginning of Draugu Alley, it was created in cooperation with the association “May 4 Declaration Club”. The authors of the memorial site project are Daiga Zigmunde, Dean of the Faculty of Environmental and Civil Sciences of the Latvia University of Agriculture (LLU) and Professor of the Department of Landscape Architecture and Planning, and Natalija Ņitavska, Head of the Department of Landscape Architecture and Planning of the Latvia University of Agriculture.
