Steve Yocum (69) of The Voice Senior passed away: ‘beautiful and sincere man’

American jazz musician Steve Yocum, who lived in Ulvenhout, has passed away at the age of 69. He became known to the general public last year through participation in The Voice Senior, where he reached the final. In the jazz world they had known Steve Yocum for some time as an excellent trombone player.

Yocum died of leukemia on Friday afternoon. Friends and acquaintances of his and jazz organizations announce this on social media. His death comes as a surprise because things have been better with him recently.

Yocum worked in the jazz city of New Orleans for over 35 years. He mainly performed as a trombone player. But the American moved to the Netherlands for love years ago. He met his wife Lucienne in a music bar in New Orleans and immediately fell in love.

“Steve was a beloved musician at the Breda Jazz Festival. He managed to create a unique atmosphere with his trombone and enthusiasm and visibly enjoyed it himself. The festival will be different without him from now on”, the Breda Jazz Festival reports. Facebook.

“Immediately after his performance, Yocum sang the stars from heaven on our main stage last year. It was our first meeting with a talented singer and very sympathetic man”, according to the organization of Jazz by the Sea.

Other participants of The Voice Senior also commemorate him. “A beautiful, positive, humorous, and sincere man. This should not have happened for a long time,” says fellow candidate IJsbrand van Belleghem.
