On Saturday it was presented at the Venice Film Festival Miss Marx, the second Italian film in competition to win the Golden Lion. It is directed by Susanna Nicchiarelli and tells the story of Eleanor Marx, the youngest daughter of the philosopher Karl Marx, one of the first people to unite feminist and socialist struggles.

Among other films in competition was Pieces of a woman, directed by Hungarian director Kornél Mundruczó, starring Shia LaBeouf and Vanessa Kirby. It tells of a couple in Boston who are about to have a child and how “their life changes irremediably during a home birth, at the hands of a confused and agitated midwife who will be charged with criminal negligence.”
It was also screened Mainstream by Gia Coppola, grandson of Francis Ford Coppola, in competition in the “Horizons” section: it speaks of a very contemporary love story, played by Andrew Garfield and Maya Hawke. Out of competition there was instead Mandibles by French director Quentin Dupieux, a demented comedy that revolves around a giant fly and also stars Adèle Exarchopoulos, star of Adele ‘s life. In connection with Zoom, environmental activist Greta Thunberg presented Greta, the documentary about her shot by Nathan Grossman.
Abel Ferrara received the Jaeger-LeCoultre award, dedicated to the best directors, just before his documentary was screened out of competition Sportin’ Life: tells about his life and the relationship with cinema, art, music and his collaborators, such as the actor Willem Dafoe, and was filmed in Rome during the lockdown.
