In the afternoon, more than ten Abrams tanks from neighboring Poland crossed the Lithuanian border, an AFP photographer observed.
US troops will stay in Lithuania until November. These are pre-planned maneuvers and are in no way related to what is happening in the region, the statement of the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense emphasized.
Lithuania has taken a leading role in shaping Europe’s attitude towards the regime of former Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko following the falsification of the results of the 9 October presidential election and the violent repression of protests.
Vilnius has given refuge to Svetlana Tihanovska, Lukashenko’s main rival in the elections, and, together with Estonia and Latvia, has blacklisted 30 Belarusian officials, including Lukashenko himself.
Lukashenko, in turn, has accused NATO of concentrating troops on Belarus’s border with Poland and Lithuania.
Warsaw, Vilnius and NATO have rejected these allegations as unfounded.
