According to the organizers, the preparation process for this year’s White Night has been full of challenges, given the special circumstances that affect the order of cultural events. The main concern of event organizers this year is to ensure sensible and safe enjoyment of culture. Thus, the “White Night” program includes more than 30 projects, focusing on the central part of the city and the Tallinas Street quarter, however, in general, the objects will be available to residents of several other Riga neighborhoods, including Āgenskalns, Imanta, Ķīpsala, Sarkandaugava, Old Riga, VEF and elsewhere.
White Night 2020 will delight visitors with both popular local and international projects over the years and a new program of local artists. Visitors will be surprised by the light installations of the British artist Luke Jerram, who has already met in previous years, providing an opportunity to get acquainted with the artist’s latest work, while national culture will be represented by traditional projects (“Sound Forest”, “Urban Poetry”, “Videography”, etc.). , and new events in contemporary art.
Already at 15.00, two exhibitions will be available to visitors at the same time – the association “Kim?” The exhibition “Assorted Nervous Spirit” and the exhibition “Being safe are dangerous” of the festival “Survival Kit 11” organized by the Latvian Center for Contemporary Art, as well as excursions with the association ‘s art ambassadors. In terms of the scope of the program, the largest project of this year will be “Sculpture Quadrennial Riga 2020”. The art objects will be opened already at 18.00 and will be easily accessible to visitors, as they will organically fit into the urban environment of Riga.
The special opportunities provided to the forum visitors to enjoy some of the events are also especially noteworthy. On Saturday, Duomo Square will be the first to watch the installation “Connections interrupted | Connections” of the Venice Architecture Biennale. The youth choir “Balsis” will be able to listen to the premiere of Philip Glass’s cycle “Songs From Liquid Days” in Latvia.
The event organizers have also taken special care of those who usually visit the forum, but will not be present this year. The “White Night” on social networks and on the forum’s website will feature online connections to venues and event venues where event organizers and artists will present their work.
Also this year, the forum information centers will get a different, but especially energetic look, which on September 5 will change from static to mobile – small PanCars cars will move around Riga and tell the residents of Riga and guests of the city “White Night” program.

The White Night in Riga is part of the international European White Nights project, launched by five European capitals – Brussels, Madrid, Paris, Riga and Rome, and is currently joined by cities around the world. The idea of the “White Night” is to make contemporary art more accessible to the population by involving those interested in various art events one night a year.
