Advice: 400 million extra needed for 10 years in the fight against drug criminals

According to the advisory committee, more money should go to the Public Prosecution Service and the courts. For example, the court should have special undermining chambers where people who are guilty of organized crime can be tried.

Some of the money will go to projects aimed at discouraging drug use.

What is undermining?

We speak of undermining when criminals – the underworld – use the upper world for the production of drugs or money laundering, for example.

Examples of undermining:

  • A farmer with an empty barn is approached by criminals to establish a hemp farm in that barn
  • A customs officer is bribed to smuggle drugs via the port of Rotterdam
  • A local councilor is being blackmailed to turn a blind eye to illegal activities in the municipality
  • Youngsters in high schools are recruited by drug criminals to do chores

The Strategic Council for Undermining is an advisory committee in which many government services work together, including the police, the Public Prosecution Service and the military police. According to this committee, the role that the Netherlands plays in the drug world must be reduced urgently, in order to make our country more unattractive to drug criminals.

Foreign drug criminals

Drug crime is the order of the day, according to chairman Peter Noordanus. “The largest cocaine washing facility in Europe has just been found in the Drenthe village of Nijeveen. Columbians have been arrested. A short while ago a boat was found near Moerdijk on which crystal meth was produced. There were Mexicans. Drug criminals choose the Netherlands. “

The Netherlands is an interesting country for foreign criminals, Noordanus believes. “Why do you think drug pills intended for the Australian market are produced here and not there? Because here you only get a minimal penalty if you get caught. And not there. So increase that penalty.”

Compulsory cooperation

The advisory committee has come up with a ten-year program to tackle drug crime. It states, among other things, that the government must cooperate more with companies that run the risk of being used by criminals. Consider, for example, companies that play a role in transport, at airports and seaports.

According to the advice, these companies should be obliged to cooperate in the fight against drugs.
