Criticism of Punishment in the Box, This Says Epidemiologists

TNews, SEHAT – Videos of sanctions against protocol violators COVID-19 when the Jakarta Transitional PSBB suddenly went viral. The video shows residents who do not wear masks being sanctioned to enter coffins.

The incident occurred on Wednesday (2/9/2020) at the Gentong Intersection RT 11 RW 11, Kalisari, Pasar Rebo, East Jakarta. In addition, the Bogor Regency government has also imposed sanctions on people who do not wear masks by entering those who violate them into an ambulance containing coffins.

Commenting on the incident, epidemiologist at the Faculty of Public Health, University of Indonesia (FKM UI), Pandu Riono, explained that such punishment does not provide a deterrent effect for offenders.

“If you want to be scary, yes really. If that’s the case (the coffin) just kidding, there is no effect, ”said Dr. Pandu, when contacted by detik.com, Friday (4/9/2020).

“If you want to be buried as well,” said Dr. Pandu.

The penalties that can be given to people who do not comply with health protocols could be educating them about the importance of complying with health protocols and the consequences of violating them. Providing education, according to Dr. Pandu, is considered more effective than giving punishment that does not cause a deterrent effect.

“They should be made aware, just educated, gathered those who violate this, asked to answer questions from the results of the education given. If it’s still wrong, they haven’t passed, then they are educated again until they graduate, ”concluded Dr. Pandu.
