Fatigue, headaches, heart problems: three people from the Wrzburg district describe what is still bothering them weeks after their Covid 19 disease.
On this Thursday, September 3, 938 Covid-19 patients from the city and district of Wrzburg were discharged as healthy according to the statistics of the Wrzburg health department. Your test results are all negative again after the illness. But does recovery also mean that you are fit again? Three people affected from the district talk about their corona disease, severe symptoms and how long it took before they felt healthy again.
Barsom Aktas: “As if the plug was pulled”
–
Barsom Aktas, owner of the two Engel pharmacies in Ochsenfurt, fell ill with Covid-19 at the end of March. The 47-year-old pharmacist still does not know where he was infected. Although his test result was negative after two weeks, the disease preoccupied him for a long time:
“I was at home for two weeks and it was like a serious infection, including gastrointestinal tract. I also had a headache, no sense of smell and loss of taste. I also had a high fever, but neither cough nor runny nose. I then isolated myself on the first floor at home and had no energy to do anything. The symptoms were new to me, I had never had a headache before. I thought that I would just be sick for two weeks and that was all. Unfortunately, it wasn’t.
Now everything is fine again, but even after the negative test result, the loss of taste and smell continued for three months. I also had abnormal heart conditions and the doctors did not know the exact cause. But that disappeared again.
Worst of all was insomnia and the fatigue that goes with it, although neither the terms fatigue nor fatigue really reflect the condition. You feel like you’ve pulled the plug. It came in waves. I felt fine for a day or two, but then again badly. It took a total of three and a half months and was exhausting. I spent most of the weekends sleeping.
I wouldn’t have needed any of that. It can end quite harmlessly and lightly and have very few symptoms, but even a supposedly mild course like mine cost me four months and who knows what else is to come. I definitely don’t want to have it a second time. “
Sonja Liebig: “Several things are no longer possible at the same time”
–
Sonja Liebig from Randersacker spoke to this editorial team about Corona when she was ill. The single mother, who works as a consultant for the crisis service in Wrzburg, was infected with friends before the curfew. She is now healthy again – but it took a long time. Corona, says the 50-year-old, has changed her:
“I got sick on the night of March 17th. It started with a sore throat, but I quickly realized that it couldn’t be a normal cold. I had a raging headache, a feeling as if I was swallowing broken glass, aching limbs, shivering , no more sense of smell and taste. The process was violent from the start. For the first eleven days, I was just slumbering.
But I also didn’t want to go to the clinic because it was said that the beds should be kept free. Somehow I took it. I was back at work six weeks after the onset of the illness, but I still haven’t felt fit. My boss understood and I had no external contact at the beginning. I didn’t realize how seriously ill I was until I realized how long it would take to get well again: three months.
Usually I do a lot, now I had to learn to say no once in a while. After work, nothing worked for me. I did a lot of Nordic walking, now my lungs were tight. I was afraid that it wouldn’t go away when I breathed. With the help of a health advisor, things got better step by step.
I can’t and don’t want to do so much at the same time. I learned from my illness to take more care of myself now. I was just on vacation in Kleinwalsertal on the mountain. For others I’m up at a snail’s pace, but I was really happy that I made it. “
Konrad Schlier: “First I had to build muscles again”
–
Konrad Schlier is mayor in Bergtheim, where a particularly large number of corona cases occurred at the end of March after the return of holidaymakers from Ischgl. The 64-year-old asthmatic had to reintegrate in his own town hall after his stay in the university clinic:
“On March 19, I developed severe symptoms. I was sick at home and sometimes had a temperature of 40.5 degrees. After two weeks I came to the university clinic because my oxygen levels were so bad. I was there in the intensive care unit for one day and then two weeks in the infection ward. After four days in a row the test was negative, I was discharged from the clinic on April 17th.
I had lost 50 pounds and after lying down for four weeks I had to build muscle again. I was exhausted quickly, even climbing stairs was a burden. Since my lungs were completely inflamed, I struggled with shortness of breath.
But I recovered faster than the clinic had forecast. There it was assumed that it would take me up to six months to get back to my old condition. I began to reintegrate by the hour and after ten weeks I was fully operational again in the town hall.
Nobody can do anything about the fact that I was infected and today I am as good as before the illness. I am not afraid of Corona and I assume that I am currently still immune.
Once you’ve been through all of this, you’ll see how serious the virus can be. Because of this, I cannot understand some of them in their carelessness. Everyone who has noticed how badly someone was suffering from Corona said that the measures are justified. At least everyone who noticed my illness sees it in such a different way. “
