Rp. 280 Million Crocodile Skin Bag Destroyed because of Forgotten “Rp. 750,000”

KOMPAS.com – A bag crocodile skin for 18,900 US dollars, or about Rp. 280 million, it was destroyed by customs officials in Australia.

The destruction was carried out only because the owner forgot to arrange for an import permit for US $ 50 or around Rp. 750,000.

Initially, Australian border authorities confiscated the bag at a Perth air cargo depot, after it was purchased by a woman from Western Australia from the St Laurent boutique in France.

The bag was confiscated on suspicion of being involved in an illegal wildlife trade issue.

Relevant officials say that alligator derivatives are actually legal goods in Australia.

However, the sale of such products is strictly regulated by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora ( CITES).

It was stated that the woman who bought the bag actually had a CITES export permit from France, but failed to apply for an import permit from the Australian CITES authority.

Luckily, the woman was not subject to fines anymore.

Australian Minister of the Environment Sussan Ley speak up in this incident.

According to Ley, the incident should serve as a reminder to residents about the importance of the CITES permit before importing products derived from crocodile skin, or other protected animals.

“We all need to be aware of what we are buying on online, because restricting trade in animal products is critical to the long-term survival of endangered species, “Ley told Sydney Morning Herald.

“Apart from the existence of rules, it is important for people to take the time to think about ethical fashion choices,” he continued.
