Knife-Wielding Incident on Fishing Boat in Otago Harbour Leads to arrest
A 36-year-old Dunedin man is in custody, facing a series of charges, following a bizarre incident on a fishing boat in Otago Harbour and a subsequent alleged unlawful entry into a private residence. The initial incident unfolded on Friday evening, prompting a swift response from local authorities. The man, reportedly wearing a gang t-shirt and allegedly armed with a knife, boarded a fishing vessel, creating a tense situation that required immediate intervention by the boat’s crew.
Senior sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin Police, detailed the events, stating that police received a call at 8:35 pm on Friday regarding a man armed with a knife who had boarded a fishing boat in the Otago Harbour. The suspect allegedly gained access to the port area by climbing over a fence and entering an enclosed yard, raising immediate security concerns.
Eyewitness accounts paint a picture of escalating tension. One witness stated that the man “walked across the wharf, knife in hand, and approached a fishing boat.” Workers on board the vessel, spotting the approaching individual, issued warnings, informing him that he was entering a restricted area. However, these warnings were ignored, and the man proceeded to jump onto the boat from the wharf, escalating the situation.
The fishing boat crew acted decisively, restraining the man and contacting the police. He was later arrested and charged with several offenses, including prohibited display of gang insignia, common assault, and possession of an offensive weapon. The incident has sparked debate about port security and the potential for similar incidents in the future.
According to Senior Sergeant Bond, “I believe this is the second person in Dunedin to be charged with [prohibited display of gang insignia].” This charge underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat gang-related activity and maintain public order in the region. The display of gang insignia is often seen as an intimidation tactic, and police are actively working to discourage such behavior.

Alleged Home Intrusion Leads to Further Charges after Bail Release
Adding to the severity of the situation, after being released on bail, the man allegedly committed another offense on Sunday night. Police were dispatched to a property on Macandrew Rd, South Dunedin, at 9 pm following reports that the man had unlawfully entered a stranger’s home, further alarming the local community.
The occupants of the residence did not know the man, and when they asked him to leave, he refused, creating a confrontational situation. Upon arrival, police apprehended him again. During the arrest, a screwdriver fell from his jacket, leading to additional charges of possession of an offensive weapon and being unlawfully on property. This second arrest has intensified concerns about the man’s potential risk to the public and the effectiveness of the bail system.
