PATNA, Bihar – A Bihar police constable, Deepak Kumar, has been removed from his position as the official bodyguard of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) legislator Tej Pratap Yadav after a video surfaced showing him dancing in his uniform during Holi celebrations. The order for Constable Kumar’s reassignment was issued Sunday by the office of the patna Senior Superintendent of police (SSP) following widespread circulation of the video on social media. The incident has sparked political controversy, with accusations of disrespect towards law enforcement and defenses citing the spirit of Holi.
The video shows Hasanpur MLA Tej Pratap Yadav, the oldest son of RJD founder and former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav [[3]], instructing his bodyguard to dance. According to reports,Yadav purportedly told the constable to dance “or risk facing suspension.”
the directive from SSP Awakash Kumar stated that action was taken “upon becoming aware of the viral video on social media in which Tej pratap Yadav, honorable MLA of the Bihar Legislative Assembly, instructed his bodyguard (constable) deepak Kumar to dance and the fact that he danced in uniform in a public place,an order was issued to reassign bodyguard Constable Deepak Kumar to the police center, and to appoint another constable in his place.”
The video allegedly captured Yadav saying,”Ae sipahi,ae Deepak, abhi ek gana bajaenge jis par tumko thumka lagana padega. nahin lagaoge toh tumko suspend kar denge. Bura na mano Holi hai (we are about to play a song on which you will have to dance. If you don’t, you’ll be suspended. Don’t mind too much, it’s Holi”).” The constable then complied, moving to the music, which drew criticism from various political groups.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a member of the ruling Nitish Kumar coalition, strongly condemned Yadav’s actions.
