Myles Smith, a 26-year-old artist from Luton, is experiencing a meteoric rise in the music industry. His song “Stargazing,” a blend of pop and country influences, has resonated with audiences worldwide. The song’s impact is so profound that even Smith himself has experienced its reach in unexpected ways. He recounted a recent experience with a utilities company: “They put me on hold, and it was stargazing playing. Those are the types of things that still seem absolutely bizarre.”

Growing up in Luton, Smith felt like an outsider. “I grew up in a working-class neighbourhood, in a Jamaican family – so my interest in rock and screamo, and not being able to play football and rugby, instantly put me in a different category to my peers,” he said. “In all walks of life I’ve felt a little bit different.”

The divorce of his parents during his formative years also had a meaningful impact on Smith. “A lot of my personal advancement has been off the back of that [divorce] experience,” he explained. “I definitely had trust issues for a while.” He credits therapy with helping him come to terms with the experience,describing it as “such a stunning tool.”

At the time [as a child] you’re never really aware – most of the learning comes when you’re an adult and you start to unpack the ways you think and feel. There’s a weird beauty to it – while it is painful and traumatic, and having to relive so many experiences is difficult, it also gives you this key to unlock a whole new side to yourself, when you do understand yourself better. and I’ve got a lot of [the trauma] to thank for being a good songwriter!

From sociology to Stardom

smith’s path to musical success was not linear.He initially studied sociology at the University of Nottingham and founded a business management company after graduating. Though, his passion for music, which began with pub gigs at the age of 11, eventually led him to pursue a career as a musician.

He began posting songs to tiktok in 2022, where he was discovered by his manager. The following year, he signed a major label deal with Sony, marking a turning point in his career.

Addressing Systemic Issues in the Music Industry

Smith is also aware of the systemic issues that can hinder aspiring musicians from working-class backgrounds.”For anyone from a working-class town, the opportunities to get into music are few and far between,” he stated. “There’s a huge disadvantage when it comes to access to musical equipment, and even music lessons, at state school level.”

He benefited from the Building Schools for the Future program, which provided access to musical equipment and resources. However, he notes that austerity measures have since impacted arts programs and grassroots venues, making it more difficult for emerging artists to break through.

Smith also recognizes the “dual burden” faced by people of color in the music industry, who are statistically more likely to be working class and may not be fully recognized for their cultural contributions.

Staying Grounded and Authentic

Despite his growing fame, Smith remains grounded and committed to authenticity. He emphasizes the importance of listeners finding their own strength and resilience, rather than relying solely on his music. On social media, Smith recently reminded his followers: “It wasn’t my music that saved you – it was you.”

As an artist, I never want to put a false sense of myself into the world, where I am this saviour. I push air – that’s my job.

Looking Ahead: Stadium Tour and Future Music

Following the Brit Awards, Smith is embarking on a busy schedule, with 37 gigs across Europe, the US, and Australia before joining Ed Sheeran for 29 European stadium shows. Despite the demanding schedule, Smith is clearly energized and excited about the future.

He is also focused on honing his craft and finding his unique voice as a songwriter. He takes breaks from writing to experience life and avoid external musical influences,ensuring that his music remains authentic and personal.
