Remember building with Erector sets or Legos? Today’s youth are tackling far more complex challenges, thanks to programs like Titanium Titans Robotics, a Washington County nonprofit empowering kids to design and build robots for world-class competitions.

This month’s recipient of the Driven By hope Award, sponsored by Washington Auto Mall, Titanium Titans Robotics aims to cultivate the innovators and problem-solvers of tomorrow. Their mission, as stated by the association, is to inspire the people of this world to become the innovators, leaders, visionaries, and problem-solvers of tomorrow, and to enrich the lives of community members through FIRST (For Inspiration & Recognition of Science & Technology) robotics, beginning with the youth of Washington County.

The program focuses on developing crucial STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) skills. Beyond technical expertise, Titanium Titans emphasizes problem-solving, decision-making, teamwork, professionalism, and effective dialog—skills vital for success in any field.

The team, comprised of high school students from various schools in Washington County and surrounding areas, emerged from a 2013 partnership between the Western Area Career & Technology Center (WACTC) FIRST Robotics Team and the Peters Township Public library Robotics Team.They merged in 2014 to form the Titanium Titans, establishing their build space at the Armory Youth Center in downtown Canonsburg in 2017. They also opened a community outreach space in Donaldson’s Crossroads.

Board president Dan Chismar joined four years ago after his daughter participated in a Lego League outreach session. He describes the intense nature of the competitions: Every year they announce a new competition,and you’re to build a robot from scratch to accomplish as manny of these goals and score as many points as you can as part of this competition, he explained. Teams receive six to eight weeks to design, build, and program their robots, a demanding schedule that requires important dedication.

It’s intense, Chismar admitted. I’m one of the technical mentors on the team. Our organization is all nonprofit, 100% volunteers. We have no paid employees, and the active mentors donate 500 to 600 hours a year. It’s an amazing time commitment, but when you see the kids learning and developing in things that the schools struggle with, those skills are so valuable in life.

The program’s impact extends beyond STEM skills. It fosters teamwork, problem-solving, decision-making, and resilience in the face of setbacks. As one of approximately 3,800 teams worldwide, the Titanium Titans face significant financial challenges. The cost of creating complex robots can reach tens of thousands of dollars, making funding their biggest hurdle.

We try to keep the costs for the children low, Chismar said. We do fundraising, we look for sponsors and sponsorships and grants for equipment. Annual dues are $250 per member, offset by raffle ticket sales.

This year, the Titans will compete in Pittsburgh, New York, and Tennessee. Their dedication is evident in their early preparations and the support they receive from former members who have become mentors. Chismar shared, We’ve had several students that have been through the program that come back and mentor as they said this has meant more to their life than their entire collage program. They realize how significant it is indeed and now they want to give back to the teams. It builds skill sets that the schools don’t build.
