Russia has not yet seen any positive measure on the part of the new US government on disarmament, the country’s permanent representative said in the United Nations in Geneva in an interview published today.
“We are ready to maintain smooth cooperation relations with any US government,” Gennady Gatilov said, according to RIA news agency.
“We would be willing to do it within the framework of the disarmament conference,” he continued. “So far, we haven’t seen any (…) progress in this in Geneva,” he continued.
He referred to an international nuclear disarmament forum that generally comes to the Swiss city and has negotiated significant agreements on equipment control and disarmament as well as the non -spread of nuclear weapons.
Russian President Vladimir Putin noted after Donald Trump’s swearing -in and his return to the US presidency on January 20 that he considers the second term of the Republican as an opportunity to inaugurate a new era in bilateral relations.
“Of course, we are closely monitoring the rhetoric and the first steps of the new US government,” Mr Gatilov noted. “We expect Americans to go through words to actions, especially because they have said a lot after January 20th.”
Presidents Trump and Putin have said they are looking forward to meeting. The US president reiterates that he wants to end the war in Ukraine, which will close three years this month as soon as possible.
According to Gennady Gatilov, bilateral talks on nuclear weapons control and broader security issues have not started again.
The power of the new New Start Reduction Agreement – which provides for restrictions on the number of nuclear heads that the US and Russia can maintain developed Their potential use – expires on February 5, 2026. It is the last pillar of bilateral agreements to control the equipment of the two largest nuclear forces.
