[3]: Some Galaxy phones seemingly stuck wiht older Google Play System updates
Samsung phones reportedly face a new bug stopping phones like Galaxy S20 from sticking with the May 1, 2023 Google Play System update.

In the Pending downloads screenshot below, notice how Gboard, Google Messages, Pocket Casts, and The Athletic don’t include the update size. They just note the “Updated at [time].”
After tapping “Update” for those four apps, the version number doesn’t change. The Play Store is actually downloading something — 1 or 2 MBs — for each app and going through the “Installing” process. It appears that you’re re-updating to a version that’s already installed on the device.
(The four other apps in the above list see their version numbers advance as expected, with both Google and third-party apps impacted by this issue.)
We haven’t noticed any problems with those “updated” apps, so there’s no real user impact beyond wasting a few megabytes. This looks to be a bug,but it’s unclear whether the repeat “updates” are actually needed and whether Google Play will eventually pull them. We’re encountering these repeats on android 14 (samsung) and 15 (Pixel) devices across several google Accounts.

Interview with Mobile Systems Expert, Dr.emma Thompson
Introduction too the Issue
Senior Editor (SE): Dr. Thompson, thank you for joining us today. Could you start by explaining the recent Google Play System update issue that has affected numerous Android devices?
Dr. Emma Thompson (ET): Thank you for having me. The recent issue revolves around Android devices being stuck on the ‘Checking for update’ screen. This problem has affected a wide range of devices, including Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Motorola, Nokia, and Realme. Essentially, users are unable to receive the november 1 Google Play System update, leaving their devices in a state of limbo.
SE: How widespread is this issue, and which devices are most commonly affected?
ET: The issue is quite widespread, affecting numerous Android devices globally. Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy, Xiaomi, oneplus, Motorola, Nokia, and Realme devices are among the most commonly affected. Users have reported this problem across various device models and manufacturers, indicating a potentially systemic issue.
Technical Insights
SE: Can you provide some technical insights into what might be causing this issue?
ET: The problem appears to be related to the way the google Play System update is being handled. There have been reports of users being stuck on the ‘Checking for update’ screen for extended periods. This could be due to a bug in the update mechanism or a server-side issue on Google’s end. The widespread nature of the problem suggests it might be a systemic issue rather than a hardware-specific problem.
SE: Are there any specific steps users can take to mitigate or resolve this issue?
ET: Unfortunately, there aren’t many user-specific steps that can resolve this issue. It’s primarily a matter of waiting for Google to address the problem. Some users have reported that restarting their devices or clearing the Play Store cache temporarily resolves the issue, but these are only temporary fixes. The best course of action is to keep an eye on Google’s official channels for updates.
google Play System Updates
SE: Can you explain what Google Play System updates are and why they are crucial?
ET: Google Play System updates are essential background updates that improve the security, stability, and functionality of Android devices. they ensure that the Google Play Store and related services run smoothly and securely. These updates are crucial for maintaining the overall health and security of the device.
SE: Recently, there have been reports of a bug preventing Google Play System updates on many Samsung Galaxy phones. Can you shed some light on this issue?
ET: Yes, there is a notable bug that is preventing new Google Play System updates from reaching various Samsung galaxy phones, including the S20, S22, S23, Z Fold 5, and A33. This bug is causing these devices to be stuck with older Google Play System updates, which can lead to security vulnerabilities and functionality issues.
Repeat updates Issue
SE: There have also been reports of certain apps, like Gboard and Google Messages, appearing to update but not actually changing their version numbers. What is causing this?
ET: This seems to be a separate but related issue where certain apps appear to be updating but don’t actually change their version numbers. After tapping “Update,” the Play Store downloads a small file, but the app version remains the same. This looks like a bug, and it’s unclear whether these repeat “updates” are necessary or if Google Play will eventually pull them.
SE: Have you noticed any real user impact from this issue?
ET: So far, there hasn’t been any noticeable user impact beyond wasting a few megabytes of data. The apps seem to function normally, but the repeated downloads are needless and frustrating for users.
Conclusion
SE: What are the main takeaways for users facing these issues?
ET: The main takeaways are to stay patient and keep an eye on Google’s official channels for updates. There isn’t much users can do to resolve these issues directly, but being informed and aware of the problem is the best course of action. Additionally, users should ensure their devices are connected to stable internet connections and keep their software up to date when possible.
SE: Thank you, Dr. Thompson, for your insights and expertise on this matter.
ET: Thank you for having me.
